Jerry Blechreder has lived in the Sheboygan area since 1980. He moved to Wisconsin from his native New York City "for the light, man.", noting that it "lets you really see, man, know what I'm saying?". The pictures below represent his entire output for this period, for, as he puts it himself, "You can't rush this shit, you know?". The comments beneath the pictures are the artist's own. He is a man of few words.
Four negroes fighting in a cave, at night 1980 "I think this one pretty much speaks for itself."
An anemic virgin attends her first Communion in a snow-storm 1982 "I think this one pretty much speaks for itself."
Seven apoplectic cardinals harvest tomatoes by the Red Sea 1984 "I can't say anything about this - it's still too much a part of me. Know what I'm sayin?"
A Californian Rugby team drinks coffee after a muddy game 1986 "You know what? I don't even remember painting this."
Twelve Chinese Cab-drivers eating corn in front of their taxis 1988 "I burned myself out on this one. Needed a little time to get my head straight again, you know?"
A sea-sick New York Jets team sipping Gatorade on the field 1994 "This is my last sports-themed painting. I don't want to turn into Leroy Niemann-Marcus or nothin."
The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian 1998 "If I could explain this in words, I wouldn't have had to paint it."
Last night I saw the eye of God, And it, unblinking, looked at me. 2000 "I feel like I received this from outside, somehow. Like it was already there in the white noise, man, and I just had to filter it out, or something. It was creepy."
Web Doodad. 2000 "What? Oh, this is just something I knocked off to amuse one of my kids."
...And came there forth blood and water. 2000 "I have mixed feelings about this one. You bare your soul every time you paint, y'know, but maybe I went a bit too far this time. I feel so exposed. I just don't know -- maybe I should take a break from painting." |
